This lead with portamento sounds is the Roland SH-101? I used to love this instrument in Squarepusher's music.

it's not hardware at all :) it's just two sunvox sawtooths stacked in octaves with portamento, vibrato, and some saturation. but all this could conceivably be done with the sh-101

In the late '90s, I wanted to buy a Roland XP-80, but I chose the Yamaha QS-300 instead. I'm not sure if I made the right decision

I think both are probably great at certain sounds. I think the QS-300 has some amazing pad sounds.
